Pterodactyl Sightings in Central California

Scott Norman, a cryptozoologist from Southern California, decided to meet with some of his associates in central California, where people had reported living pterosaurs. He was skeptical, thinking that they had videotaped only a bird at night. When he spent a night watching the sky, however, he saw something like a Pteranodon, with bat-like wings but a wingspan of about 8-10 feet and a head that he estimated was four feet long.

Pterodactyl Sightings – Ropen Overhead in Minnesota

“Pterodactyls” have been reported in many areas of North America, including Minnesota. Eyewitnesses see modern pterosaurs around the world, actually, but this is mostly about two ropen sightings in western Minnesota in the summer of 2018, by a young man (Jonathan Archer) who was interviewed on camera for this video.

Why Americans see Pterodactyls

Why do Americans report seeing non-extinct pterodactyls across the whole Continental United States? Why do people from around the world report the same flying creatures? It’s because pterosaurs are NOT all extinct: At least a very few species are still living.

A Bird or a Ropen in North Carolina – Pterodactyl

Flying dinosaurs in the capital city of North Carolina? ALIVE!? Yes, and many persons in Raleigh have seen these large flying creatures, including the eyewitness Cynthia Lee, a veterinary technician. Now we have video evidence from the cell phone of this young lady.

Live Pterodactyls in YouTube Videos

My principal YouTube channel for videos about modern living pterosaurs is Protect Animal Life. As of early May, 2022, this channel had about 230 videos about modern living pterosaurs, a.k.a. “pterodactyls”. Here are a few of them . . .

To the best of my knowledge, no other YouTube channel has nearly as many videos on modern pterosaurs as Protect Animal Life (PAL). . . .

. . . The huge flying creature flew by them, close to the ground, fortunately seeming to ignore the horse and rider; perhaps it was hunting different prey . . .

“Pterodactyl” in Arkansas

So for the first time I’ll tell my weird story. In the summer of 2012 my husband was working . . . for *Buffalo River National Park, Arkansas . . .I was living in Georgia with our infant son but was really missing my husband so we arranged a visit getting a two week rental of a mountain cabin near the park in late August. . . . One morning . . . I looked up. Silently flying was a pterodactyl right over us, lowering in circles without flapping; it was featherless, long beaked, crested, and [had] a tail with something on the end of it. . . . From the window, I watched it fly as it turned to a tiny speck disappearing over the mountains. I had no phone signal, and the nearest houses were five miles down the road. I just sat shaking holding my baby for a long time. . . . I know what I saw, and it scared me into silence for five and a half years.

.

Pterosaur Sightings in Pennsylvania

Near Pottstown, Pennsylvania, about 40 miles northwest of Philadelphia, three children observed an apparent pterosaur flying overhead. . . . The sighting was on Thursday, May 5, 2016, in the middle of the afternoon, and the oldest child of the three is eight. Here is part of that email.

My children are as interested in dinosaurs as any children their age. . . . They have seen herons in the past, and know what they look like in flight. We have sometimes commented on the similar appearance. . . . There is no doubt in my mind that they truly believe that they saw a pterosaur.

Videos on Pterosaur Sightings

I’m in Floyd county Georgia & in 2014 I saw one as a matter of fact there was a couple outside arguing at the time & when I said ohhh sh** that’s when they both looked up in the direction I was looking then they immediately stopped arguing as we watched it fly into the distance, and at first I thought it was a plane but realized that it made no noise but then it moved its head around & gave one giant flap then sped up . . .

“Pterodactyl” in Arkansas

Over the years, I’ve gotten several pterosaur sighting reports from the state of Arkansas. I recently got another report from Arkansas, except this is a “hearing” rather than a sighting:

My friends and I have a nice spot on the Mulberry river where we like to go camping. After one camping trip was over and most of us went home, . . . [two] decided to stay and enjoy one more night . . .

They were sleeping in the back of the SUV when they were woke up by what they described as the sound of a pig squealing. . . . then the sound came toward them and went right over the SUV. They discussed it  and decided it must have been an owl carrying off a piglet.

I replied with my opinion about what they heard overhead that night and about the possibility the predator was what many Americans call a pterodactyl:

I agree in the possibility that it was a large owl taking away a piglet, but there may be an issue with that interpretation. For those unaware of modern pterosaurs, that idea may appear to be the best explanation. But I daresay piglets are rarely carried off by owls in the middle of the night. Most pigs (wild or domesticated) are too big for any owl to handle. Those are not the usual prey for such birds. A particular ropen, however, may have developed a method for catching pigs in that area. That would seem a better explanation to me. [opinion of Jonathan Whitcomb]

Here’s an even more recent encounter, but this one was a sighting (slightly edited for English):

. . . So for the first time I’ll tell my weird story. In the summer of 2012 my husband was working . . . for *Buffalo River National Park, Arkansas . . .I was living in Georgia with our infant son but was really missing my husband so we arranged a visit getting a two week rental of a mountain cabin near the park in late August. . . . every morning I’d drink my coffee out [on the deck of the cabin] while the baby was next to me in his play pen.

One morning . . . I looked up. Silently flying was a pterodactyl right over us, lowering in circles without flapping; it was featherless, long beaked, crested, and [had] a tail with something on the end of it. It was still very high but I screamed and ran inside. It was hard to judge its size, but I’m guessing 10-15’ in wingspan.

From the window, I watched it fly as it turned to a tiny speck disappearing over the mountains. I had no phone signal, and the nearest houses were five miles down the road. I just sat shaking holding my baby for a long time. . . .  I know what I saw, and it scared me into silence for five and a half years. [This was reported, in February of 2018 by the eyewitness, to Jonathan Whitcomb (who concluded that the flying creature was a large ropen).]

*The more common form of the name is Buffalo National River.

Eyewitnesses Report Living Pterosaurs

“It was probably 1982 when me and my older brother were sitting in our carport [in Texarkana, Arkansas] It was getting dark but there was plenty of light in the sky when we saw what we believe to be a pterodactyle [pterosaur]. The wingspan seemed to be about 25’ to 30’ ft wide . . .”

Ropen-pterosaur of Umboi

Seven boys were terrified, in about 1994, as they saw the ropen fly over a crater lake. On the remote island of Umboi, in Papua New Guinea, the boys climbed up to Lake Pung, just north of their village. Within just a few minutes, they saw the giant creature fly over the water. The boys ran home in terror and the memory of that fear lasted for years.

New book by Jonathan Whitcomb

It [the nonfiction book being written] will include a simple explanation of the “Evolutionary Boundary” experiment and an introduction to living-pterosaur investigations.

Live Pterosaurs in America

The following publications have more than just a few comments or just one chapter about reports of apparent extant pterosaurs in our modern day.

.

Pterosaurs in Kansas and Arkansas

Let’s consider two states where eyewitnesses report seeing living pterosaurs: Kansas and Arkansas. Both sightings are covered in detail in the book Live Pterosaurs in America, nonfiction cryptozoology.

Pterosaur in Kansas

“My friend and I were talking and I mentioned that I had seen an extremely large bird that resembled a pterodactyl some years ago . . . I could not believe my eyes as I immediately thought of a prehistoric bird when I saw it. . . . a wing-span of 16-20 feet.”

This eyewitness used the word “bird,” apparently thinking that pterodactyls are prehistoric birds. But when asked about the possibility of feathers, she said, “It did not appear to have feathers.”

Pterosaur in Arkansas

“It was probably 1982 when me and my older brother were sitting in our carport [in Texarkana, Arkansas] It was getting dark but there was plenty of light in the sky when we saw what we believe to be a pterodactyle [pterosaur]. The wingspan seemed to be about 25’ to 30’ ft wide. . . . an awesome sight to see.”

Question: Was there any sign of feathers or . . . was it leathery or naked skin?
Answer: We did not see any signs of feathers, just sharp edged wings, the sharp pointed beak, and the sharp pointed crest on its head.

Question: Did it have any tail? [long-tailed flying cryptids are my specialty]
Answer: We did not see any tail. I have looked at my dinosaur book and the picture of the pteranodon looked like what we saw.

From readers of first edition of non-fiction book Live Pterosaurs in America (note 2nd ed.):

non-fiction cryptozoology book titled Live Pterosaurs in America“[The] new book arrived today! . . . a wonderful job!!! . . . more sightings than they can dispute (21 states!!!) . . . a descriptive and engaging ongoing investigation . . .” Susan Wooten, South Carolina.

“This seems to be the author’s second book on the subject, and this one is worth the effort. He has focused on the accounts of witnesses who saw something, and that adds credibility. The writing is easy to read and he adds comments and analysis . . . more useful. . . .” Red Rabbit, Cleveland, Ohio. [Five stars for the first edition]

“The problem with science is that we think we know it all and that is far from reality. This book shows courage to continue the search. If you have an interest in cryptozoology you should read this.” Dale Reeder, PA.

“This book is a great book! This book contains a lot of sightings and information on living pterosaurs. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in living pterosaurs.” [from Amazon-anonymous child] A Kid’s Review [Five stars for the first edition]
